EUROCITIES meets Commissioner Thyssen to discuss working together to implement European Pillar of Social Rights

On 13 April, the mayor of Ghent and president of EUROCITIES, Daniël Termont and deputy mayor of Barcelona and chair of the social affairs forum, Laia Ortiz met with Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, Marianne Thyssen, to discuss how cities and the European Commission can work together on the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights.

Barcelona adopts ambitious strategy to reduce inequalities

On 9 April, the Barcelona City Council adopted the Barcelona Strategy for Inclusion and Reducing Inequalities. This is a 10-year strategy that will run until 2027. The strategy won the votes of all parties in the city council and the support of all social partners and civil society.

European Commission takes first steps towards a more ‘social’ European Semester

The European Commission published in March the 2018 country reports that analyse the economic and social policy reforms in EU member states and identify EU-wide trends in terms of convergence. It is for the first time that the European Pillar of Social Rights is integrated into the country reports, which shows the Commission’s commitment to use the European Semester as a key tool to implement the pillar.

Highlights from the Social Affairs Forum in Utrecht, 7-8 March 2018

On 7-8 March, the social affairs forum met in Utrecht. A record number of 175 participants from over 50 cities, including 15 elected city politicians and representatives of the European Commission, OECD and UN-HABITAT, took part in the meeting. They agreed cities play a key role in translating the Sustainable Development Goals into relevant actions at local level and involving citizens in the process.

Multidimensional poverty in the EU: social situation monitor seminar

Each year the Social Situation Monitor (SSM) carries out policy-relevant analysis and research on the current socio-economic situation in the EU on the basis of the most recent available data. This initiative is directed by the London School of Economics (LSE), in consortium with ICF, on behalf of the European Commission.
