Highlights from our WG Children meeting online - cities united to mitigate COVID-19 impact on children

From the disruption of their schooling to their social skills and mental health and well-being, the pandemic has had a strong impact on children and young people. Home-schooling has deepened the inequalities in education and training. Child poverty is increasing in cities and the poorest are the hardest hit. These are some of the conclusions from the recent WG Children meeting held online on 10 July 2020.

Vienna adopts ambitious strategy for children and youth

Vienna's first children and youth strategy was adopted on 28 May 2020. The strategy aims to make Vienna the most child and youth-friendly city. Among other things, it will anchor a children's and youth budget of 1 million EUR for 2021 as well as a children's and youth parliament.

Glasgow signs a strong pledge on minimum income

Glasgow signed a strong pledge on minimum income in June 2020. This is the second pledge from Glasgow, reaffirming the city's commitment to implement the European Pillar of Social Rights, after the first pledge submitted in February 2019 on housing and assistance for the homeless (ESPR principle 19).

Madrid signs a strong pledge to gender equality

Madrid signed a strong pledge to gender equality in June 2020. This is the third pledge from Madrid, reaffirming the city's commitment to implement the European Pillar of Social Rights, after the first two pledges in autumn 2018 on principle 4 'active support to employment' and principle 11 'childcare and support to children'.
