Our not-to-be-missed Covenant Ceremony will mark the launch of the climate pact, a coalition of actors to support Europe’s transition to climate neutrality in the context of the EU Green Deal.
Starting as a pioneer initiative in 2008, the Covenant of Mayors aimed at unilateral and voluntary participation of European cities in energy efficiency improvement, renewable energy source usage increase, and greenhouse gas emission reduction by 2020.
This movement has been not only supporting EU ambitions on emissions reductions and climate action, but also pushing it forward. Covenant cities are paving the way towards climate neutrality in 2050 with impactful actions by 2030 and by developing integrated strategies to deliver inclusive climate action that benefits all citizens equitably.
The Covenant of Mayors Ceremony will showcase Covenant cities’ achievements and leadership in the context of the European Green Deal.
The European Green Deal is a new roadmap for Europe's economy and society to become climate-neutral by 2050. It aims at turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas, by making the transition just and inclusive, and by improving the well-being and health of citizens and future generations.
To achieve this ambition, the European Commission will launch a European Climate Pact bringing together citizens, industry, civil society and European, national, regional and local authorities and institutions.
The huge success of the European Covenant of Mayors, with close to 10,000 signatory cities to date, makes it a central force of the Climate Pact.
As a symbol of this, the Climate Pact Announcement Event will take place together with the EU Covenant of Mayors Ceremony.
The event will also showcase the richness of climate actions within the EU society through a participants’ dialogue, and will start to engage society in view of its participation with pledges and actions in the full-fledged Climate Pact to be launched in the second half of 2020.
Join us on 4 March in Brussels for a day full of lively discussions and celebrations with Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, the EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, and many cities and regions.
