EUROCITIES is delighted to announce the creation of a new cross-forum working group that will focus on ‘children and young people’. From cultural engagement to health and well-being the working group will work across all EUROCITIES forums, focusing on the varied aspects of children and young people in our cities

For 2020, the working group will look at 3 key objectives which include:

  • Mitigating the effects of child poverty
  • Reducing the amount of ‘looked-after children’ in our cities (children in public care)
  •  Improving social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing of children and young people
Through events and other activities, the working group will facilitate cities exchanging knowledge, sharing best practices and mapping city initiatives which look to tackle these objectives. The participating cities will also focus on how they can align the local policies to key EU policies such as the Youth Guarantee, Child Guarantee and European Pillar of Social Rights.
The UK City of Leeds will chair the working group. Leeds has a strong record of celebrating and empowering children and young people, and the city is currently working towards a vision for Leeds to become a ‘Child Friendly’ city – that is a city that puts children and young people at heart of everything it does, creating a safe and prosperous city for young people to grow-up in.

Join us for the first meeting of the WG, in Leeds, on 19-20 March!

The working group will meet for the first time in Leeds on 19-20 March. The meeting will focus on the topic of child poverty.
The first day will focus on the situation in Leeds, which like many cities, is polarised with many children and young people still living in poverty. The morning sessions will present Leeds’ ambition to become a Child Friendly City, and details of the approach and methods the city is using to tackle child poverty. This will be followed by study visits across the city to meet some of the people and organisations that are working with Leeds City Council to develop solutions and projects to tackle this issue.
The second day will be focused on a wider discussion about child poverty, with an opportunity for other cities to present some of the initiatives and policies that they have introduced in their cities. There will also be a business session, where cities will have the opportunity to discuss and shape the agenda for the new working group going forward. The cities will also receive an update from EUROCITIES on all the key EU policies relating to children and young people.
