Kaminis has been mayor of the Greek capital since January 2011. In October 2016, he initiated the launch of Solidarity Cities, which will consolidate ongoing efforts at local level to receive and integrate refugees and will reinforce these by providing a platform for cities to exchange knowledge and expertise on this highly topical issue. Over a dozen cities, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Leipzig, and Gdansk, have already expressed support for the initiative. Updates on the activities and achievements of EUROCITIES and its members within this new framework are available at
Established in 2003, the City Mayors Foundation awards the World Mayor Prize every two years to a mayor who has made outstanding contributions to his or her community and has developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world.
