As part of our Cities4Europe campaign, Nantes held a citizens' consultation on 28 February to ask if Europe should take better care of people's health and well being.

Public health and wellbeing are priority issues for European citizens. Although health policies are mostly defined by national governments, several issues affecting European citizens are decided at European level - food safety, European medicines agency, coordination of national health services etc. Other health issues are decided at local level - urban planning, sustainable transport etc. Nantes citizens were asked to discuss these different topics and propose their own priorities and recommendations to be raised at European level.

Four speakers were invited to take part in the event:

  • André Sobczak, vice-president, European affairs, Nantes Metropole
  • Nicolas Pradalie, councillor, office of Vytenis Andriukaitis, European commissioner for health and food safety
  • Alice Jan Dahan, campaign support officer, EUROCITIES
  • Patricia Saraux-Salaun, doctor, Department of Public Health, Prevention and Solidarities, City of Nantes

The moderators were Laurence Aubron of Euradio and Anne Giraud.

At the end of the consultation, the panel put forward three recommendations:

1. To strengthen consumer information on food products by, for example, creating a European 'nutri-score' multicolour nutritional system

2. To develop similar and transparent medical care throughout Europe in relation to issues such as medical tests and medicines

3. To promote food as a priority educational issue by, for example, organising a European week of taste or breakfast tests in schools.

These citizens' proposals, together with those from other panel events taking place across Europe until the end of February, will be presented at the second mayors summit on the future of Europe on 20 and 21 March 2019.

As part of the mayors summit, which will take place two months ahead of the European Parliament elections in the presence of more than 100 city politicians, EUROCITIES and the European Commission will present the panel results to national and European political leaders.
