As part of our Cities4Europe campaign, Turin's citizens' consultation discussed the role of technology in the socio-economic and cultural development of Europe.

The topics chosen for Turin's event were the relationship between technology and service innovation in public administration, transparency and citizen participation and technology and privacy. Following presentations introducing the three topics, participants were split into three groups, by personal choice, to discuss the issues and choose their top three proposals.

Three experts acted as moderators for the topic groups:

  • Paola Pisano, assessor for innovation, City of Turin - technology and service innovation in public administration
  • Carlo Boccazzi Varotto, Hackability - transparency and citizen participation
  • Ruggero Pensa, Department of Computer Science, University of Turin - technology and privacy.

Three recommendations came out of the discussions:

1) Promote use of standards in developing simple and effective user experience in digital services in public administration fields

2) Set up simple, common, Europe-wide rules for e-participation and citizen involvement in direct democracy through online tools

3) Make data privacy and security a priority, spreading knowledge on these issues among European citizens.

These citizens' proposals, together with those from other panel events taking place across Europe until the end of February, will be presented at the second mayors summit on the future of Europe on 20 and 21 March 2019.

As part of the mayors summit, which will take place two months ahead of the European Parliament elections in the presence of more than 100 city politicians, EUROCITIES and the European Commission will present the panel results to national and European political leaders.
