EUROCITIES Social Affairs Forum explores how to involve citizens in social innovation

Over 80 participants from 33 cities attended our social affairs forum (SAF) in Nantes on 16-17 March. The event focused on the theme of citizen involvement and participation in social innovation. Keynote speaker Peter Ramsden, an expert on social innovation and urban issues, highlighted the role of city authorities in supporting social innovation.

The cities of tomorrow will be green and decarbonised

On 17 March, the Mayors Adapt Office and the European Committee of the Regions organised a workshop on 'Towards decarbonised and resilient cities: The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy' at the European Habitat Conference in Prague. Anna Lisa Boni, EUROCITIES secretary general, delivered the introductory speech and presented the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy as a key instrument for cities to rise up to the climate challenge and implement the Paris Agreement.

EUROCITIES at the Urban Future global conference

EUROCITIES was represented on several panels at the Urban Future conference on sustainable cities. Nicola Vatthauer, EUROCITIES communications director, participated in a panel discussion on public participation. She described how citizen participation has evolved in cities, to the extent that it is now embedded in the way most cities communicate with their citizens. Nikolaos Kontinakis, EUROCITIES project coordinator, spoke on the panel ‘Searching for happiness: can big data make cities more sustainable?’, drawing on our involvement in the CITYkeys project and the Green Digital Charter.

EUROCITIES members talk urban investment with the European Investment Bank

The meeting was part of our work on the EU urban agenda and took place in Brussels. The EIB was keen to get cities' feedback on its urban investment priorities and tools. Participants looked at the challenges cities face in using EIB financial instruments and explored opportunities for the development of future EIB products for urban development projects.

Anna Lisa Boni at CoR conference on cohesion policy post-2020

The EU Committee of the Regions (CoR) organised the final conference of its project on the future of cohesion policy in Brussels on 3 March. The aim of the project was to initiate discussion on the shape and content of cohesion policy post-2020. EUROCITIES secretary general, Anna Lisa Boni, addressed the focus of the future cohesion policy during a roundtable session.

Policy statement: our response to the circular economy package

Our policy paper stresses that clear common rules on extended producer responsibility and eco-design will be important to achieve the new targets for reuse and recycling. Cities are well placed to raise awareness of sustainable consumption and stimulate new, resource-efficient business models.

OPTICITIES partners test local ITS services

The OPTICITIES project aims to develop and test urban innovative transport systems (ITS) for passengers and freight. Since early February, local end users in the six OPTICITIES partner cities have been testing 14 ITS services, including a freight navigator, a multimodal navigator and an integrated public transport prioritisation system.

Policy statement: contractual public-private partnership on cyber security

Ensuring the integrity of information networks and citizens' data is a shared responsibility. In the absence of trust in information networks, electronic devices and connected infrastructures, cities risk alienating technology-averse citizens, thereby undermining their own efforts towards developing a transformative model of governance and building sustainable 'smart' cities through the widespread use of ICTs.

EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award: finalists announced

Lisbon, Murcia and Palma de Mallorca have been selected as finalists for the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award 2015, and Malmo, Utrecht and Vienna are shortlisted for the 4th Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) Award. The two awards will be presented by European commissioner for transport, Violeta Bulc, and European commissioner for the environment, Karmenu Vella, on 20 April.

Cities in action: City Talks on Sustainable Energy, Utrecht

With its aim to become carbon neutral by 2030, getting citizens involved in the shift towards sustainable energy is an important part of Utrecht’s strategy. Its City Talks on Sustainable Energy, which began in 2014, have been an important part of this process. The aim of the talks was to draw up a new energy plan for the city, which focuses on sustainable and affordable energy.
