Pact of Amsterdam: a new role for cities in EU policy making as EUROCITIES celebrates 30 years

The Dutch EU presidency launched the Pact of Amsterdam establishing an urban agenda for the EU on 30 May. This shows important political recognition of the role of cities in the EU, providing a new framework for their involvement in developing and implementing European policy.


Air quality: cities are counting on ambitious and binding targets

As trilogue negotiations on the National Emissions Ceilings (NEC) Directive draw to a close, EUROCITIES makes a number of urgent calls to ensure that action to improve air quality in cities is complemented by strong EU legislation. These include setting ambitious and binding targets to enable real progress towards cleaner urban air by 2030.

Cities in action: OPEN Glasgow – City Data Hub

Our latest 'cities in action' case study looks at the OPEN Glasgow initiative, through which the Scottish city is opening up its data and providing a place where these can be shared and used to everyone's benefit. Lessons from the EUROCITIES Knowledge Society Forum in Rennes

The EUROCITIES Knowledge Society Forum met in Rennes on 27-29 April 2016 to explore solutions to support the digital transformation of the economy and society in cities, with participation from over 50 participants from 23 cities. We look at some of the lessons learned at the forum, including the importance of placing citizens at the heart of smart city strategies, and the need to balance opening data with protection and privacy.


Smart city projects agree to enhance cooperation

Meeting in Eindhoven on 23 May, the coordinators of 13 ongoing European smart city projects agreed to enhance cooperation and open more channels of communication in order to help each other on the path to success. The discussions took place at their first ever meeting dedicated to community engagement on the eve of the 2016 General Assembly of the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities (EIP SCC).


Climate Chance Summit in Nantes

Nantes will host the Climate Chance Summit on 26-28 September, an event bringing together participants from businesses, local authorities, associations, trade unions and civil society to discuss the achievements of COP 21 in Paris and formulate common messages ahead of COP 22 in Marrakesh. The event is branded as 'the event for non-state actors dedicated to concrete action'.


EUROCITIES event on affordable housing

Our event on affordable housing in European cities on 26 April was an opportunity to demonstrate how cities can use affordable housing policies to improve social cohesion, and to identify any obstacles cities face in implementing these policies in the first place. The event attracted 60 policy makers and other stakeholders.


EUROCITIES cooperation platform makes the most of networking in Porto

This year's EUROCITIES cooperation platform meeting took place in Porto on 12-13 May, with over 120 participants from 75 member cities. This is the main networking event for EUROCITIES members, and this year discussions focused on how to motivate colleagues to participate in European work, peer learning experiences and updates on projects and policy.

Our working group employment met in Malmo on 21-22 April to exchange views on how best to tackle undeclared work and youth employment, and how to work together with companies to address these issues.

Spring saw a new round of twinning visits between EUROCITIES members on adaptation of cities to climate change.
