Open letter: work with cities to rethink Europe

City leaders meeting in Milan on 16-18 November issued an open letter urging EU and national leaders to work more closely with cities to rebuild and strengthen the European project. As the level of government closest to citizens, cities have valuable insight into their concerns, visions and expectations, which is vital for creating a renewed, more legitimate and relevant Europe.

Daniël Termont is new EUROCITIES president

Daniël Termont, mayor of Ghent, became the new president of EUROCITIES on 18 November. He takes over from Johanna Rolland, mayor of Nantes, who has led the network since November 2014. Daniël Termont will be supported in his role by Karin Wanngård, mayor of Stockholm, as vice president.

EUROCITIES awards 2016: Zaragoza leads peer-to-peer economy

Zaragoza's La Colaboradora initiative won this year's cooperation award at EUROCITIES 2016 Milan. This unique co-working space operates with a 'bank time' approach whereby members dedicate their time and expertise to supporting others, for example by giving advice on social media or helping design a logo.

We launched our 30th anniversary publication on 16 November, a collection of essays by young professionals. The young authors were asked to reflect on the future of cities and the challenges and opportunities that could arise in the years to come. The idea behind the publication was to gather fresh insights from the young people who will shape the future of our cities.

EUROCITIES awards 2016: Athens engages citizens in reform

Athens won the EUROCITIES award for innovation this year for its SynAthina project, a social innovation platform that facilitates community-led solutions to local problems and a new culture of public policy making. The project has helped transform neighbourhoods in the city even in times of economic instability.

EUROCITIES to lead CITIES-GroW project on migrant integration

EUROCITIES will lead a new project on migrant integration through economic activity in cities, CITIES-GroW. The project was approved by European Commission DG Home and will begin in February next year. The project will involve 16 cities and will build on the methodology developed, tested and implemented under the ImpleMentoring project.
